Hancock Library Moves into Historic Firehouse
About this information: The text was transcribed from photographs or scans of newspaper clippings.
The Hancock Public Library moved in 1991 from a small, single-room building to the historic former fire department building on Main Street. A defining feature of the building is a large arched front window, accented by a handsome brick exterior.

Hancock Library finally a reality
From the newspaper article “Hancock Library finally a reality” written by Logan Baillod
A project started in 1985 by the Hancock Public Library Board is finally becoming reality.
The Hancock Library Board, along with Dudei Construction of Plainfield, and members of Hancock Village Board and Town of Deerfield Board were present Nov. 8 to break ground for the new library project.
The project had to be down scaled because the library board and the Friends of the Library could not raise near enough funds to complete the original project. Now the old fire station will be renovated and a furnace room, lobby, and bathrooms will be built on. There is still more money that has to be raised for the project.
The board will not give up on their original project, once they get this done they hope to raise more money to finish the original project. The library hopes to move into the new building sometime in 1990.
The Library Board and Friends of the Library have done a lot of work raising funds and seeking donations. No tax dollars are being used for this project, all funds have come from donations and fund raisers.
$10,000 Donated to Hancock Library
From the newspaper article “$10,000 donated to Hancock Library” written by Logan Baillod
Four years ago the Hancock Library Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Library undertook a major project — the construction of a new library for the village of Hancock.
Basic American Foods, a potato processor who contracts with many local potato growers has recently responded to a proposal sent to them. This proposal was also sent to many other corporations asking them to help raise the necessary $150,000. Basic American Foods made a donation of $10,000 to the building fund.
So we would like to thank Basic American Foods for their donation of $10,000 and all the other contributors. This last donation from Basic American Foods brings the building fund up to $58,000, which is slightly over one-third of the way to our goal.
The original library
The impact of librarians in Hancock far exceeded the small, single room building they operated from.
